A Kitchen Garden

No ingredients taste better than those just picked.  So, in 2004 we commissioned a kitchen garden within the Griffin's grounds, under the auspices of Joe Hand.

Our garden team takes the concept beyond what we could have hoped for, turning our food miles into food paces.

The best strawberries we've tasted.  Red, white and blackcurrants, raspberries, apples, pears and medlas.  And sticks of pink rhubarb.

Peas, broad beans and salads.  Leeks, onions, red and white cabbages and rows of garlic.  And the ingredients for the picallilli and chutneys that we sell in our little shop.

Joe has now moved to run a smallholding in Hay and you can find his stall there every Thursday.  In his place, the garden is curated and driven forward by the very brilliant Emma Rodell.

Group bookings

There are few better spots than the Aga Room or the Tack Room for fun get-togethers with friends.

The Tack Room has an open fire, and in ordinary times is ideal for groups of between 8 and 12.  The Aga Room can comfortably fit up to 18, and with french doors out to the garden is ideal for a supper party with pre-dinner drinks on the lawn.

For obvious reasons, Covid guidelines make larger parties impossible at the moment.  Our online bookings are limited to 6.  If you are more than 6 but have children under 11, do drop us an email to see what we can do.

Special Diets & Access

Although we aren't a vegetarian restaurant, we think providing options that are not meat or fish is a great challenge for our kitchen team.  We can also cater for coeliacs and those on lactose free diets.

Our dining room can easily accept wheelchairs.  We recommend parking in the residents' car park and using that entrance.

In any case, we will always ask you when you book, whether by phone, online or email, to let us know of any special requirements .

Service Charges

Many restaurants imply a rather broad meaning to the word “discretionary” when applying a service charge.

We do not levy any service charge. Anything that guests choose to leave is split equally between our whole team (except sadly the business owners).

All we, as owners, ask is that resident guests who have eaten with us remember the team when they check out.

Children

We welcome children all year round and at both lunch and supper, in both the bar and the library.

We have a short children's menu with food of similar quality to that on our usual menu.  We also have small organic pots for very small children.

If you are staying and would like your younger children to eat earlier, then we can provide high tea in the bar from 5:30.
